What is Otoplasty (Ear Reduction, Pinning)?

Otoplasty is a general term for ear surgery and can include ear reduction or reshaping depending on the patients desired results. This technique can correct congenital deformities that may become of greater concern in adolescence as well as abnormal ear shape due to injury. Otoplasty focuses on creating a more natural look for the patient and family, helping to boost confidence and self-esteem. Overly large ears, protruding ears, and dissatisfaction with previous ear surgery are just some of the reason to pursue otoplasty.

The Procedure

Once full cartilage development has been achieved, which in children is after the age of 5 otoplasty can be considered. Similarly, adult patients of all ages may be referred for treatment. The ear is approached through an incision on the back side. Cartilage removal or reshaping is then performed to achieve a natural projection and look for each patient. After the ears are discreetly placed closer to the head, scars are hidden behind the ear and not readily visible to the casual observer.
