What is Orthognathic Surgery

Many patients have misalignments of either the upper or lower jaw, which may be visibly noticeable to others. Similar to the cosmetic asymmetry that may exist, these structural variations can also affect sleeping, eating, and breathing. Differences in both upper and lower jaw can be present at birth, develop during adolescence, or be the result of a traumatic injury.

The Procedure

These deformities frequently result in malocclusion or misalignment of the bite, but can be present with a normal bite. Cuts in the bone can be made in a variety of places depending on the repair needed. After lengthening or shortening the face or jaw, plates and screws and used in order to maintain the desired position. Corrective jaw surgery can positively affect facial symmetry, facial balance, and malocclusion.
